LED light bulb replacements are here! LEDison lamps are being used to replace 10 to 60w incandescent bulbs in commercial applications (like shopping malls). The LED lamps have ten times the service life of the incandescents they replace, and use only 1 watt!

In the case of Sony BMG et al. v. Kim Arellanes, the RIAA is strenuously arguing against the defendant’s request that a neutral, third-party perform a forensic search of the defendant’s hard drive to find evidence that she engaged in activities frowned upon by the music industry.

Minneapolis’ bait-car program is one of the first and most successful of its kind in the country. More than 240 people have been arrested in the operation since it began in 1997, including 34 so far this year. The conviction rate is nearly 100 percent — because it’s tough to beat a case with your face on tape as you steal a car.

MS Research in Cambridge UK is experimenting with a “personal black box” technology that could eventually be able to record a person’s entire life via episodic snapshots (and eventually other data) and store it in an online database. The device is a first step in an attempt to boost human memory power beyond it’s natural capacity.

The Register reports that Google plans to use PC microphones to collect statistics on a user’s environment. Peter Norvig, who directs research at Google, told Technology Review that this software would start to show up in Google software ’sooner rather than later’. The software collects short sound clips and removes background noise.
