The Tech Report put Intel’s “Woodcrest” and quad-core “Clovertown” Xeons up against AMD’s Socket F Opterons in a range of applications, including tests from fields like computational fluid dynamics and proteomics. They’ve also quantified power efficiency in terms of energy use over over time and energy use per task, with some intriguing results.

As GPU and CPU power increases, real-time ray tracing is becoming more and more likely to be our rendering method of choice. This article takes a look at a custom made engine for both Quake 3 and Quake 4 that uses ray tracing for rendering as well as collision detection. Pictures and videos show off the impressive results!

A few short weeks ago, NVIDIA unveiled the GeForce 8800 series of graphics cards and the nForce 600 family of core logic chipsets on the very same day. The flagship parts in each of these product categories, the GeForce 8800 GTX and the nForce 680i SLI, made the basis of what NVIDIA has dubbed their “Ultimate Gaming Platform”.

At long last, AMD has begun shipping CPUs made on a 65nm fab process, and The Tech Report has tested a pair of them for power consumption and clock frequency headroom. They’ve also measured energy use use per task, an actual measure of CPU energy efficiency, with direct comparsions to Intel’s Core 2 Duo.
