Blu-ray software sales have now surpassed HD-DVD for the first time the week of December 24 and they did so by an impressive 20 percent. The sales gap is expected to widen further in 2007 based on research conducted by Twentieth Century Fox and Blu-ray is expected to outsell HD-DVD by a 3.5-to-1 ratio by the end of the first quarter.

This trend is believed to be behind a trillion yen capital spending bet by Toshiba on flash and other semiconductor technology. The company plans a massive expansion of Nand flash chips manufacturing over the next three years, despite the 70 per cent collapse in prices over the course of 2006.

So should gamer’s run right out and get a copy of Vista today? Apparently not, according this article, especially for NVIDIA users. With quotes like “very obviously let down by the Windows Vista gaming experience” and “NVIDIA’s Forceware 100.54 driver on the other hands was more or less a mess” pretty much sums it up!

With this transition, cost is a major factor, of course, but not just from a manufacturing perspective. With the change over to 65nm, AMD has also sharpened their focus on power consumption and energy efficiency, which translates to lower operating costs as well. What AMD has not worked into the transition are any core performance enhancements.
